The specialty of Orthopaedics covers a broad range of traumatic and pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system. NSW Health staff working in ambulance services, emergency care, radiology, perioperative services, rehabilitation, paediatrics, cancer services, social work, pharmacy, community health care, and indeed in most health care settings will, at some time, provide care to patients with orthopaedic conditions. This article highlights selected resources from the CIAP collection to support clinical decision making and evidence-based practice in the delivery of high quality patient outcomes.

Staff working in radiology settings may find the texts, Basic Radiology 2e (2011) and Introduction to Diagnostic Radiology, of value. Both of these eBooks contain detailed information relevant to diagnostic and interventional imaging, illustrations and images, and systems overviews. Related content is linked in the right hand panel. These eBooks are provided by Access Medicine, which also offers Multimedia learning resources for radiology. To view these images and videos, select Multimedia from the grey navigation menu, then select Explore Essential Radiology.

For a comprehensive overview, the text Current Diagnosis & Treatment in Orthopedics 5e (2014), provides chapters on Trauma, Musculoskeletal Oncology, Foot and Ankle Surgery, Sports Medicine, Paediatrics, Reconstructive Surgery, Amputations, Orthopaedic Infections, and more. Its content includes many anatomical drawings, images and illustrations, which are downloadable as PowerPoint slides for educational use. Additional content such as textbook updates, procedural videos, and links to other references, is listed in the right hand panel titled Related Content.

Another useful text is The Big Picture: Gross Anatomy, which contains detailed information and extensive collections of anatomical drawings and illustrations, including skeletal, nerve, vascular and lymphatic systems. Related content, where available, is displayed on the right hand panel within each chapter.

The Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) notes that 'more than one in three people aged 65 or over fall at least once a year and many fall more often,' and that 'no other single cause of injury, including road trauma, costs the health system more than falls. The NSW Falls Prevention Program is available on CIAP via the home page, accessed from Guidelines in CIAP’s left navigation menu. The NSW Falls Prevention Program is a collaboration between the CEC, the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI), Ambulance NSW, and Local Health Districts (LHDs). It promotes a comprehensive, systemic approach to falls prevention and to reducing fall injury within NSW.

One of the journals added to the CIAP collection in July 2016 is Injury, an international journal dealing with all aspects of trauma care and accident surgery. Injury is the official journal of the British Trauma Society and the Australasian Trauma Society. To subscribe to the electronic table of contents for Injury, select ‘Subscribe to new volume alerts’, which is located beside the image of the journal’s cover, and follow the prompts.

CIAP provides access to a wide range of journals and books. With over 40 journals relevant to orthopaedics, practitioners can browse publications, access full text articles, subscribe to electronic tables of contents, and stay current with contemporary issues and advances in their fields of practice. Journals of particular interest may include:

Current Orthopaedic Practice. The July/August 2016 issue contains winning papers from a recent research awards program. To receive electronic table of contents notifications for this journal, select eTOC, located on right hand of title page.
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics. This journal publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed papers from around the world on the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric orthopaedic disorders.
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. The journal is devoted exclusively to the diagnosis and management of hard and soft tissue trauma, including injuries to bone, muscle, ligament, and tendons, as well as spinal cord injuries. The journal provides the most current information on diagnostic techniques, new and improved surgical instruments and procedures, surgical implants and prosthetic devices, bioplastics and biometals; and physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Journal of Physiotherapy. This is the official journal of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and publishes research of significance to the science and practice of physiotherapy.

UpToDate is an evidence-based and peer reviewed decision support resource, accessible via CIAP’s left navigation menu under Quick Links, Evidence-Based Practice and other menu options. UpToDate contains a wide diversity of fully referenced information on orthopaedic diagnoses, treatment and management for adults and paediatrics. For more information on using UpToDate, refer to the User Guides in CIAP’s Knowledge Centre.

CIAP Update

We have recently added a new article request feature to the CIAP site. You can find this by selecting 'Article Request' from CIAP’s top menu bar. This service is intended to complement the existing document delivery feature provided by Ovid, though the databases are still intended to be your primary source for accessing journal articles. On the occasion that you have conducted a comprehensive search but fail find a particular document, you may request it from your associated medical library using the new article request form.

Subsequent to the recent addition of UpToDate on CIAP, you can now enjoy full access to the UpToDate app. Links to the app can be found in CIAP’s mobile section, located on the top menu bar.

The NSW Ambulance service has also recently released an app, for which links can also be found in CIAP’s mobile section.

Balance Confidence: A Predictor of Perceived Physical Function, Perceived Mobility, and Perceived Recovery 1 Year After Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation

Abstract:

This longitudinal multisite study sought to estimate the effect of balance confidence measured at 1 month post stroke rehabilitation on perceived physical function, mobility, and stroke recovery 12 months later.

The results showed that after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation post stroke, balance confidence predicts individuals’ perceived physical function, mobility, and recovery 12 months later. The authors concluded that there is a need to address balance confidence at discharge from inpatient stroke rehabilitation.

The home page of UpToDate displays an easy-to-use search field where text may be entered for specific and efficient searching. The home page also offers access to other important features.

In the top left hand corner, click on Content to display a list of the 22 clinical specialties covered in UpToDate, with access to more than 10,000 topics. Select any of these specialties to browse comprehensive information presented in easy to navigate format.

In the top right hand corner, you may Log In or Register to/for an UpToDate account. When you have logged in, you will see new items appear: your name, My Account and CME. For more information about registering and tracking your CME (CPD) credits, see the relevant CIAP User Guides.

The Help link provides access to FAQs, Demos and information about editors and editorial processes as well as a range of Podcasts on clinical topics.

Explore the other items on the top right hand of the home page, including

Patient Info, with both ‘Basic’ and ‘Beyond the Basics’ patient information by topic
What’s New, which lists the newest evidence-based clinical information by specialty
PCUs, short for Practice Changing Updates, which are recent peer reviewed, selected recommendations and/or updates that may have an impact on usual clinical practice
Calculators, containing an a extensive range of Clinical Criteria calculators and Medical Equations by topic area
Drug Interactions, which links to the Lexicomp Drug Interactions module. Lexicomp provides generic and brand names for drugs used in the United States, Canada, and internationally for adult, paediatric, and geriatric populations. It offers drug-to-drug, drug-to-herb and herb-to-herb interaction information.
